"Congratulations on your beautiful twins!" the nurse exclaims as I cradle both my baby boys in my arms.

Her smile fades as she continues, "However, due to our country's one-child policy, you're only allowed to keep one - choose wisely."

 

“축하합니다, 쌍둥이입니다!” 두 남자 아기를 내 품에 안기면서 간호사가 소리쳤다.

"하지만, 우리나라의 한 자녀 정책 때문에, 한 자녀만 선택할 수 있습니다… 현명하게 선택하세요.”라고 이어서 말하며 그녀의 미소는 희미해졌다.

나를 학대한 사람이 왜 나를 그의 작은 자두라고 불렀는지 전혀 이해하지 못했지만, 내가 나이가 들고 그가 죽었을 때, 나는 그 단어를 싫어했고 가능하면 내 주변에 그것들을 두지 않으려 했다.

내 한 살짜리 아기가 뭔가 아는 듯한 표정으로 나를 쳐다보며 생애 첫 단어로 “플럼"을 말했을 때 피가 차게 식는 것을 느꼈다.

 

 

I turned off the light and went to bed.

나는 불을 끄고 잠자리에 들었다.

아침에 나는 연이어 난파된 난파선과 끊임없이 해안으로 표류하는 시체들의 흐름을 바라보면서 악마처럼 미소지었다.

 

 

“Oh no honey, I’m not pregnant” I said as a strange child came up and began asking me why my baby was upset, pointing at my belly.

“But I can hear it trying to get out, it says it’s coming whether you like it or not”.

 

“아니야 얘야, 난 임신하지 않았어." 이상한 아이가 다가와 내 배를 가리키며 왜 아기가 화를 내는지 묻기 시작하자 내가 말했다.

"근데 나가오고 하는 소리가 들려요. 당신이 좋든 싫든 나올거라고 하네요."
