Snake bit and dilerious, my friend was going to die if we didn't get out of this desert and to a hospital within the hour so I stopped to ask a local at a crossroads which way to turn.

"Left" he said and so I turned and hoped to God that I could remember my right from left just this once.

 

뱀에 물린 내 친구는 한 시간 안에 이 사막을 벗어나 병원으로 가지 않으면 죽을 것 같았고, 나는 사거리에서 현지인에게 어느 방향으로 가야 할지 물어보려고 멈췄다.

그는 "왼쪽"이라고 말했고 나는 돌아서서 이번만큼은 제발 왼쪽에서 오른쪽을 기억할 수 있기를 바랐다.

 

 

"Oops," said the dentist, as the pain began to spread, "I seem to have mixed up my lidocaine with my capsaicin..."

 

통증이 퍼지기 시작하자 치과 의사는 "리도카인과 캡사이신을 혼동한 것 같다"며 "죄송합니다..."라고 말했다.

So I was a bit bewildered when I got a text from his number 3 years after we put him in the ground.

 

아버지는 돌아가시기 전 매일 밤 저에게 잘자라는 문자를 보내곤 하셨어요.

그래서 아버지를 땅에 묻은 지 3년이 지난 후 아버지의 번호로 문자를 받았을 때 조금 당황했습니다.

병원 침대에서 깨어난 소녀는 한 손에는 '18' 풍선을, 다른 한 손에는 베개를 들고 아버지의 돈을 갉아먹는 미망인이 자신을 향해 다가오는 것을 발견했다.

"졸업 후 이렇게 아픈 건 정말 끔찍한 일이지만, 너를 위한 완벽한 선물이 있어..." 계모는 풍선을 놓아주며 단호하게 말했다.
